The Yanmar main engines were installed new four years ago along with a separate Yanmar 12 volt, 180 amp generator. New ZF 63A reversing gears were installed with the engines. These gears have offset output shafts which allow the engines to be installed more level. Spares include a spare prop, filters and injectors. An oil change pump services all three Yanmar engines (mains and genset).

House electrical power is provided by a bank of four batteries, Heart 1 KW inverter and 50 amp charger. The zincs are protected by a Promariner Galvanic Isolator.

The Lancer 44 is basically a fast trawler that can also sail. The hull is well laid up fiberglass with an underwater shape much like a conventional, modern sail boat with a fin keel and partial skeg-hung rudder. The six foot deep keel carries 7000 pounds of ballast with a relatively light displacement of 11.5 tons. What makes the hull special is the wide stern and small reverse chine around the aft third or so of the hull. The chine does not greatly affect low speed performance but provides enough lift to allow the boat to plane. The Lancer 44 features a twin engine configuration. They were fitted with engines from 50 HP and up, but this particular example was originally equipped with 185 Perkins which were recently replaced with new, 200 HP Yanmars. This allows speeds in excess of 18 knots!

Or if you are in a more peaceful mood, you can hoist the sails and proceed in silence at a somewhat slower rate. The sloop sail rig features a boomless, loose footed main that furls against the mast. The furling gear keeps the sail external to the mast and avoids jamming issues. The fore sail also furls and all lines are led into a single, two speed electric winch at the helm station in the main salon/pilot house. Setting the sails and trimming sails is a simple one person operation while seated at the helm inside the comfort of the pilot house. The loose footed main allows easy furling of the sails and provides good upwind performance at some expense to downwind sail power. Experience has shown that a spinnaker (not included) is needed for the best downwind sailing performance.

The exterior features a teak rail cap with stout stainless stanchions with a four bolt base that attaches to the inner vertical surface of the bulwarks rather than bolting to through the teak rail cap. This is a good design feature that avoids loosening stanchions and simplifies maintenance of the teak rail cap.

The mast side stays are led to chainplates on the cabin sides leaving the side decks unobstructed. The twin aft stays go to the extreme corners of the transom leaving the center area clear for the raised dinghy davits. This allows the large, aluminum hull Zodiac RIB to be carried overhead so the swim step is unobstructed.

Unlike most sailboats of this size which involve an awkward climb up to deck level you enter over the wide swim step through a gate in the transom into the large, rectangular cockpit area exactly like a typical motor yacht. The cockpit floor level is low, roughly dock level. From the cockpit, one can walk forward to the bow along relatively wide side decks or enter the main salon/pilothouse through a full size companionway door on the starboard side of the aft bulkhead.

The main salon features built-in seating (which converts to a double berth) along the aft bulkhead to port. A folding dining table is against the port side with chairs along the forward railing. The helm station is forward to starboard. Navigation instruments and the single line winch for sail control are located on the console ahead of the wheel.

Down three stairs forward is the roomy galley to port and a navigation station to starboard with a desk and seat. The galley features a new Force 10 gas range and new, full size refer/freezer. Forward to port is the guest cabin with a double berth and to starboard is the large head with shower. The nicely finished master cabin is in the bow with an island queen bed and private door to the head.

Excellent engine access is through two large hatches in the pilot house floor as is typical in a motor yacht.

Cabin heating is provided by a Webasto hydronic system with hot water heater units in each cabin. A “Red Dot” heater provides additional cabin heat when the engines are warm.

The Lancer 44 is basically a fast trawler that can also sail. The unique hull design looks like a modern sailboat below the waterline but allows planing speeds as well as good upwind sail performance. This Lancer 44 features a twin engine configuration with newer 200 HP Yanmars. This allows speeds in excess of 18 knots or power cruising at 8 knots and 1.7 gph economy. Or you can just put out the sails. The sloop sail rig has a loose footed main that roller furls against the mast and a roller furling fore sail with all lines led to the interior helm station. All sails can be set and trimmed while seated at the interior helm with the two speed electric Lewmar 44 winch. This example demonstrates quality of build by its apparent excellent condition, and also features useful upgrades accomplished by the current owner.
