Here in Norfolk we don’t tend to find ourselves with that many sailing boats, I often ask myself if that is because

a) There simply aren’t as many as there are power boats
b) The Boatshed Norfolk team don’t look hard enough to find them
c) Our potential customers associate us with power and therefore don’t contact us

Whatever it is we often say to each other that we should really aim to have more Norfolk based sail boats for sale. Bob Goddard, Boatshed Norfolk’s resident sailor has been suggesting for some time that if I have a bit more understanding of sailing generally we might actually find ourselves listing more.

So I finally submitted to his goading and volunteered for the intolerable pain of going on a sailing holiday in the sunshine!!

So after some research I ended up booking a week’s sailing in Croatia with www.activity-yachting.co.uk The team at Activity Yachting were first class and the help and advice they gave before I booked is the same kind of honest advice we give to our customers and it was this advice that resulted in me booking with them, so thanks Jim and Gary for a great service!

Now, I have had power boats for many years and can navigate and many years ago I did some dinghy sailing so I thought – flotilla’s – follow the leader how difficult can it be. If there were any problems my 12 years old son is a dinghy sailor so we would be fine! If you have been on a flotilla holiday you will know it is not case of follow the leader, but more a case of this is where we are going and we will see you at 6pm!

Well despite this we survived, a helping hand from one of the support crew on day one and we were left to it for the rest of the week and managed to do a decent amount of sailing throughout the week.

Croatia itself is a marvellous coast line and we were lucky enough to take in the heart of the Kornati National Park. The pictures will give an indication of the beauty of the area.

What did I learn about sailing means that another member of the Boatshed Norfolk team can talk with greater authority to our customers looking at sailing boats. Firstly I did some sailing which is always a good start, I have a better understanding of what does what on a decent size sailing yacht and finally I learnt that sailing holiday are a fantastic way to spend a week or two in the sun. Finally a few real life pointers gained from personal experience for anyone considering a sailing holiday

1. Don’t forget when you leave your mooring to recover the gang plank!
2. If you fill up the water don’t try and be clever and put the filler caps on the marina pontoon as there is always the possibility you might head out to sea without them and need a return trip!
3. If you fancy a morning swim don’t forget to remove your spectacles before you dive in or you might have to get the neighbouring boats kids to do some snorkelling to recover them
4. Ensure your yacht has self tailing winches!
